Hematologic oncology physician Dr. Matthew Taub delivers cancer treatment to patients as a member of the Multidisciplinary Committee at Memorial Hospital Miramar and a staff member at Optimum Oncology Hematology Associates. Based in Pembroke Pines, Florida, Dr. Matthew Taub also leverages his decades of experience to recommend evidence-based treatments and approaches as a member of local hospital tumor boards.
Tumor boards are foundational to delivering high-quality cancer care. They comprise physicians from several disciplines and specialties, who work together to review cancer cases, discuss diagnosis tactics, and develop post-treatment care. In some hospitals, all cancer patients are discussed within the board, while in others, the board only addresses highly complex or unusual cases.
Boards usually meet on a weekly basis and may review several patients at a time. During a meeting, board members consider each aspect of a patient’s circumstance to develop a comprehensive treatment plan; for example, a social worker may inform the surgeon that the patient lives alone and may have difficulty during the recovery period. Further, tumor boards give specialists the opportunity to learn from their colleagues and identify candidates for clinical trials.
